Orphaned Alan Bell Artwork 5
A couple of delightful drawings from Justice 39 (and possible elsewhere) this week, featuring a blushing girl guide submitting to an inspection from the founder/leader of the troop.

To gain her ‘Be Prepared’ badge a girl guide has to overcome three challenges: the cane is one; we note there’s a slipper handy by the chair in the second picture, so that’s two.
ReplyDeleteShe’ll be very concerned about what the third challenge might be . . . but she desperately wants the badge, to add to the others already on her (discarded) shirt, in picture one.
I expect all of those badges have been well earned.
ReplyDeleteI'm quite fond of these girl guide scenes. Particularly intriguing is the idea of a girl guide being disciplined for breaking the Guide Law, and having to recite the relevant line as she is punished:
ReplyDeleteA Guide’s honour is to be trusted.
A Guide is loyal.
A Guide's duty is to be useful and to help others.
A Guide is courteous.
A Guide obeys orders.
A Guide smiles and sings under all difficulties.
A Guide is pure in thought, in word and in deed.
Many good traditional values there. And many possibilities for punishment, of course. Teaching a girl how to be useful and help her scoutmaster. Giving her difficult orders to follow, and punishing her when she hesitates. Punishing her, and then punishing her harder for failing to smile under punishment. And of course accusing her of impure thoughts, which carry the strictest punishment of all — perhaps even a touch of the other.
