Letter — The Happy Valley

From the Janus Club magazine Privilege 42. I remember being riveted by this drama when it was on TV — somewhat titillated by the depiction of CP but also horrified by the cruelty and brutality. Holly Aird was sensational as Juanita. The Happy Valley Dear Sir, May I thoroughly recommend  The Happy Valley  as the most remarkable portrayal of corporal punishment seen on television, and hope for a speedy repeat for the sake of any member who missed it. I read about it the  Radio Times  beforehand and couldn’t believe it when they said how completely Holly Aird lived the part of the teenage Juanita Carberry. They said she was still trembling two hours after one of the caning scenes and that the real Juanita, who was an advisor to the film, said how realistic Holly was. It is an amazing film, derived from the book (and later film)  White Mischief , set in East Africa just after the war. But  The Hap...

OBB — Letter from Privilege 7

O.B.B. According to my calculations, up to the 100th issue of  Janus  there was a tie for most thrashable female between Chris Evert and Agnetha of Abba. Now, I’ve already made my feelings known about Chrissie, but Agnetha’s posterior certainly makes a case for itself. The self-satisfied little popsie even goes so far as to claim it as the most beautiful bottom in the world, in a film promoting the group’s assumed qualities. Agnetha Faltskog I’ve seen her on television a couple of times recently, and she is a very badly behaved girl, pointing her extremely broad and fleshy rump at the camera at every available opportunity. Furthermore, she puts so much sincerity into her singing that she often seems to be on the brink of tears. I’d be quite happy to push her over that particular brink. As Sweden have recently banned all forms of corporal punishment, it occurs to me that Agnetha would make an excellent scapegoat for us to make our feelings known about that decision. Can you...

OBB — Letters from Privilege 1

When Janus launched their Janus Club magazine Privilege I think they decided to farm off the OBB correspondence there — I suspect they were getting mountains of them and there’s only so many letters perving over Felicity Kendal’s bottom that you can run in one issue without it becoming boring. Sadly I only have a handful of copies of the original Privilege magazine so I don’t have any of their Top-30 lists but the first edition did have a bumper crop of letters… O.B.B. The Order of the Burning Bot, as introduced into  Janus  many moons ago, has had a very good airing and it has been decided gradually to withdraw it from the magazine. It will be replaced in its present form in  Privilege  with a slightly upgraded version. We plan to publish in  Privilege  a periodical top thirty of OBB’s along with several letters in each issue plus a rather special celebrity OBB cartoon which starts next month with a well-known ITN Newscaster upended across her desk wit...
