Moments in C.P. History - Number 14: Martha Douglas

Final part of the series by Paul Melrose, from Februs 45 The United States, throughout its history, has long had a tradition of corporal punishment and even today, when ‘civilised’ Europe has made the use of beating illegal in prisons and schools, the US continues to exercise ‘state’s rights’ in the application of corporal punishment, particularly in its schools, to both males and females should the public be perceived to favour it, thus there is no common policy across the country. Why then, you may ask, is ‘Moments’ going back to the schoolrooms of the United States of nearly 200 years ago, to 1823 in fact, when CP is so prevalent in the country’s schools today? Well the reason is that the case in point created a flurry of attention for a number of reasons and eventually led to a change in the law of the state concerned. In the United States today, most of the states which allow school beating, in the form of the paddle, are in the deep south and, sadly, a disproportionate numb...

Clipped Wings

From Whispers 5. Not credited, but this is very similar to other R.T. Mason stories. Edward had told her before to be more careful about her parking because she had had a couple of near misses. But as usual there were several things in her mind at once and her proximity to the next car was perhaps not paramount. As she backed there was a jolting crunch. Swallowing, she went forward again and then back at a snail’s pace this time. And then feeling sick got out to look at the damage. It was only then that she realised it was the Head’s car. Sarah’s stomach turned over as she took in the state of the wing, the headlamp. They had only been there a week. St Luke’s School, a minor boys’ public school, where Sarah’s husband Edward had been appointed Housemaster and history teacher. It was a very good appointment, after one year in the hell of a state comprehensive, and naturally he was very anxious to do well — as of course was Sarah. And now she had wrecked the Headmaster’s car! She st...

Appointments at the Vicarage

From Blushes 20 ‘ Clarissa! ’ The Reverend Francis Towney intoned the word to himself as he cycled along the lane back to the vicarage. A lovely June afternoon made into something superlative by thoughts of that quite heavenly  Clarissa . He tried little extra conceits of his own.  Clarissima .  Clarissabel . What a simply stunning girl. Attempting for the moment to picture the stunning Clarissa with her bottom bare the Reverend Towney almost failed to negotiate a bend in the lane and very nearly finished up in the hedge. Clarissa Wrangham . Niece at the big house, Wrangham Grange. A tall, shapely, succulent 17 and there since yesterday, for the school summer holidays. A glorious 10 weeks. Glorious because he, Francis Towney, had been requested by Lady Celia Wrangham to do something about Clarissa’s history. Which apparently was not up to scratch. ‘According to her school report, Mr Towney, the gel is making very heavy weather of it.’ Francis Towney of course ha...

Letters from Blushes 21

Dear Sir, I read with interest some time ago the questionnaire, published in  Whispers 4 , and, more recently, the replies of some of your readers. I would like to add a few views and suggestions of my own but I will limit my comments to C.P. in educational establishments. I believe that corporal punishment in girl’s schools should be for mature sixth form girls, aged 16-19 for whom it should be the normal punishment. It should be administered at the end of a formal weekly 6th form two-hour detention by the Headmaster, with the Deputy Teacher, in charge of the detention, still present. Any teacher, male or female, should have the right to award detention but the Duty Teacher should be chosen from a short list of senior masters. The normal punishment should be six strokes of the cane but correct retention of position during caning should be strictly adhered to, with each stroke not received to the complete satisfaction of the Headmaster, caning two strokes of the tawse after a...
