The evocative Bring on the Clowns story from Uniform Girls may be set in a 1930s country house but the model's costume in the photo-set pandered to a contemporary fad.
Siouxsie Sioux, who had adopted the harlequin look in her punk years, deserves an OBB for the Blushes mood she projects in this image connected with her video for Happy House in 1980, somewhat before Blushes and Uniform Girls graced newsstand’s top shelves.

ReplyDeletePresenter Billy Grundy should have taken Sioux over his knee and spanked her bottom hard during his notorious, slightly sozzled studio encounter with emerging punk rockers on the 'Today' programme. Grundy lost his job over that interview, for goading the spotty oiks of The Sex Pistols into swearing on live TV. But he'd been flirting with Sioux too; surely giving her a good spanking would have been a more pleasurable reason to get the boot.

DeleteWhat an uncouth rabble! The malodorous racket known as 'pop music' has been central to the indiscipline and lawlessness of modern youth ever since the 1950s. National Military Service and, of course, National Domestic Service for the girls, would have done this lot the world of good. The foul-mouthed yob at around 1.49 very much reminds me of that twerp Graham in 'Video Lessons' (elsewhere on this blog). Ronald Carling soon put him in his place! Yes, I wouldn't have minded seeing Mr Grundy in spanking action with that saucy young trollop. She was certainly asking for it.
DeleteGood call, NMO. Suggested re-casting for Video Lessons: Mr Carling (Bill Grundy), Graham (Steve Jones) and Pam (Sioux. Not that one would ever want to re-cast the incomparable 'Pam'.) Parts of the story tally with the video clip.

DeleteFor me, though, the best Blushes stories were oik-free, or else any oiks were placed well in the margins. Better if the Mr Carlings of this world have unfiltered access to girls who need spanking, strapping, caning and whatever else takes their fancy.
DeleteThank you, Anonymous. I hadn't really appreciated quite how well my Video Lessons analogy fitted into Mr Grundy's encounter with these ruffians. What a shame it is that it was the louts who went on to ill-deserved fame and fortune, whilst Mr Grundy's career went into a downward tailspin. But then that's how the forces of anarchy tend to prevail in these times. In a more just world he would indeed have met up with Susan Ballion (the young woman's real name, and rather Blushes-like at that) 'after the show' and summarily dealt with her, perhaps in some dingy hotel room, with the hapless Jones creature forced to watch. Of course, in a more just world Jones wouldn't be a member of some up and coming raucous beat combo but an arrogant young upstart taking umbrage at one of his gentleman elders and betters for making friendly overtures towards his pretty young lady friend.
DeleteI'm not sure if I'm speaking to the same 'Anonymous' as above but, yes, I rather enjoy reading of an uppity oik boyfriend or even husband getting put firmly back in his place by an elder 'elite' male, especially in a 'near future' scenario such as Graham in Video Lessons. Or in a historical setting also such as David Parslow in 'Bring On The Clowns' although he didn't really get put in his place quite like Graham. Nevertheless, the commie troublemaker was powerless to stop Major Lambton divesting pretty Sarah of her hoity toity 'town girl' ways. Maybe he will go on to teach 'Commie Dave' a more powerful lesson later on.
