This series has been a great exhibition of Alan Bell's genius. Some of the drawings feel like AB experimenting or doodling before coming up with his trademark punishee as exemplified in The Detention Room drawing and to some extent in the second work here: sweetly pretty, straight shoulder length hair, often with a ribbon tied in a bow, slim-waisted but full-bottomed. ReplyDeleteDrawing two here rightly subjects a girl to a prodding and poking around in her knickers. The cane is appropriately intrusive and impersonal for this, as shown.
A scenario for much intrusion in schoolgirl knickers would be morning knickers inspection in which all girls have to queue up so they can be intimately checked to see if they comply fully with school regulation navy knickers mandatory requirements. This can be done with the cane as it essentially entails the knickers are yanked open to ensure the girl’s navy knickers come complete with the required white gusset. Those failing to meet the rubric would be put to one side, and told to remove their knickers and join the cue for knicker detention. This is essentially a six-stroke bare bottom caning, administered with all other miscreants present. The prettier ones from sixteen years upwards would be further detained for ‘other’ prodding and poking as the head sees fit.
Yes, formal knicker inspections combined with frequent informal knicker inspections are required to ensure that schoolgirls are complying with uniform regulations, right down to the proper white gusset inside of their navy knickers. Each morning, a line of girls commanded to lift their skirts properly as the men on inspection duty for the day make their way down the line. Sometimes poking and prodding with the can, sometimes more gently with a hand - tugging, prodding, squeezing, patting to make sure that each pair of knickers fits just right. Girls who fail a knicker inspections not only get six strokes of the cane but also get the improper knickers confiscated, and have to spend the rest of the day bare-bottomed beneath their pleated skirts. And frequent surprise inspections keep girls on their toes, particularly the prettier ones who often find themselves alone in the halls running an errand for one master and encountering another who insists on her pausing to prove she’s following uniform regulations. A girl found bare-bottomed due to an earlier failure doesn’t face a double dose of the cane, but is likely to receive some smacks to her bare sore bottom as a reminder.
