Mr Malving, senior English master at Fairgrove School, had a cottage in France, in the Cevennes, a lovely unspoiled wooded region in the south-west, and each year he took four or five sixth formers there for a week’s holiday. Five was the most he said he could comfortably get in his estate but quite frequently it would be just four, always two girls and two boys. Mr Malving’s invitations were extended seemingly in a purely personal way; that is it wasn’t only people studying French at A Level. If there was any basis on which these invitations were made it seemed to be that the girls were always particularly nice-looking ones. And then if those girls had boyfriends at the school they were also invited.
